Joe Campana (1920-2011)

From the Mercury News:

“Music was Joe Campana’s passion, and that played in several ways. In the community, his store, Campana Music Co. in Lafayette, has been open since 1946, as Lafayette’s oldest business and likely one of the oldest in Contra Costa County.
At home, music was central to Campana family get-togethers.

“We had jam sessions in the backyard every Saturday,” said Mari Kolb of Danville, Campana’s daughter. “People all brought their instruments “… it was just such good fun.”

Joe Campana — who though 90 looked perhaps 20 years younger — never stopped working. He usually was in his store six days a week, his daughter said, and indeed worked from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. this past Saturday.

He died suddenly Sunday, she said, likely of a heart attack.

The Oakland native returned from his Army Air Corps service during World War II to follow his passion with the Lafayette music store. The store has been at 990 Moraga Road ever since, catering to hundreds of school children renting instruments and buying books and sheet music, as well as others taking music lessons, over the decades.”

Another good obituary article here.
